2016 World Series Wrigley Field Chalk Wall

This spectacularly colorful Wrigley Field chalk wall commemorates the North Siders’ 2016 World Series win. It all starts with one piece of chalk left on a Sheffield Avenue sidewalk. Fans who live in the neighborhood start to write messages on the stadium’s outside walls. “We did it!” and “This is for you, Dad!” are everywhere. As word spreads, more people come to share their thoughts. In the end, the beautiful pastel colors cover every square inch of the Wrigley Field exterior. It’s one of the most touching fan tributes to a team in history, and the nicest I have ever seen. Sadly, the chalk walls are power washed after a few weeks and the tributes disappear. But, thankfully, club management has the wherewithal to preserve some of the memories on an interior display in their new administrative offices lobby.

It takes 108 years between championships to celebrate a World Series win on the North Side with a Wrigley Field chalk wall. This is the club’s third title in 11 World Series tries. But it’s the first at Wrigley Field. The other two wins are at West Side Park, at the intersection of Polk and Taylor streets. The team moves to the North Side in 1916. And, by 1920, the old wooden West Side Park is no more. The rest, as they say, is history!
