The North Siders would win 21 consecutive games during the 1935 regular season. This is still a major league record (not including ties). And they were poised to topple the Detroit Tigers in the 1935 Wrigley Field World Series. Indeed, the Game 5 win in front of 49,237 fans is one of only two home team World Series wins at Wrigley Field. Ironically, the other also would come against the Detroit Tigers, in 1945.
Alas, with the score tied 3-3 in the eighth inning of Game 6 back in Detroit, the North Siders waste a leadoff triple and fail to score. Detroit wins the game 4-3 (and the series, 4-2) when Goose Goslin strokes a two-out, walk-off single. The World Series winless streak would stretch 108 years to 2016, when the North Siders finally won. Learn more about this print in About and Frequently Asked Questions.
