1929 Wrigley Field Left Field Bleachers (pt. 1)

This left field bleachers view is one half of a stunning two-piece, 11 x 72-inch panorama of Wrigley Field in July 1929. It’s a hot summer day, and men in nearly identical white short sleeve shirts pack the stands. This particular North Side team features sluggers Kiki Cuyler, Riggs Stephenson and Hack Wilson – all future Hall of Famers. To this day, it’s the only team in MLB history where all three starting outfielders finish the season with more than 100 RBIs. Left fielder Stephenson has 110, center fielder Wilson has 159 and right fielder Cuyler has 102. Meanwhile, second baseman Rogers Hornsby hits .380, with 40 home runs and 149 RBIs.

The team finishes 98-54, well ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates. But great as it is, the North Siders would eventually lose the 1929 World Series to the Philadelphia Athletics, four games to one. Maybe it’s Prohibition that dooms the team? Or maybe it’s the U.S. stock market, which starts to fall in September and then crashes October 24 – just 10 days after the World Series ends?
