Description

This 1908 Chicago Cubs team photo features some of the best players of the era, from star pitcher Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown to the famed Hall of Fame double play combination of “(shortstop Joe) Tinker to (second baseman Johnny) Evers to (first baseman Frank) Chance.” This team wins back-to-back World Series championships in 1907 and 1908. Newspaper accounts at the time report the team is so dominant that it bores their fans. Little did they know it will take 108 years to win another championship.

Indeed, the site of this 1908 Chicago Cubs team photo, West Side Park, is the home to the most successful Chicago Cubs teams of the 20th century. They win pennants in 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1910. New ownership moves the team to the North Side’s Weeghman Park in 1916. And West Side Park is torn down in 1920. The University of Illinois Medical Center occupies the site now.

The front row of the 1908 Chicago Cubs team photo features, from left to right: Orval Overall, Mordecai “Three Fingers” Brown (HOF 1949, P, 1903-16), Del Howard, Johnny Kling, Johnny Evers (HOF 1946, 2B, 1902-17, 1922, 1929 ), Frank Chance (HOF 1946, 1B, 1898-1914), Joe Tinker (HOF 1946, SS, 1902-16), Jimmy Slagle, Jimmy Sheckard, Frank “Wildfire” Schulte and Solly Hofman.

Meanwhile, the back row includes Heinie Zimmerman, Ed Reulbach, Chick Fraser, Jack Pfiester, Kid Durbin, (possibly) Jack McCormick (team trainer), Harry Steinfeldt, Carl Lundgren, Vin Campbell and Pat Moran.

Also, an “HOF” next to the name indicates the player is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In this case, each was selected by the Veterans Committee.
